About GoPacks

How it Began

GoPacks started as a mission project of First Presbyterian Church in Marietta, Ohio.  The church piloted what was to become the GoPacks Elementary Program at Washington Elementary School in March of 2015.  There was such need in the community and such support for the project, that GoPacks became a stand alone 501(c)3 nonprofit less than a year later!

Since then GoPacks has grown strategically to fight food insecurity.  Only expanding when our capacity allows it and can sustain the growth, we now partner with 7 schools and run 3 programs.

Our Mission Statement:

To fight food insecurity, we provide students with nutritious foods during school weekends and breaks, while working to increase families’ resources and support networks.

How We're Different

Although frequently classified as a "backpack" program, GoPacks is so much more!

All three of our programs are relationship based and follow a two-way giving model to fight food insecurity.  Our programs are NOT handout programs. This means that all people involved with GoPacks give and take.  Everyone works towards the same goal - all parties have responsibilities and everyone works together to help each other.

Another way we stand out is our two-step approach to fight food insecurity.  We recognize that those facing food insecurity have an immediate need - consistent access to nutritious food.  To meet this need, GoPacks provides food to local students to provide for when they are away from the free meals school provide during the school year.

The second need is long term.  To break out of poverty and not face future food insecurity families/individuals need to increase their resources and support networks.  The combination of resources needed varies from family to family.  Consequently, GoPacks provides numerous classes, workshops, clubs, and events throughout the year in multiple disciplines to best meet the varied needs of our community.

Lastly, we firmly believe that full bellies are not enough.  We follow nutrition guidelines to ensure the food we provide is balanced and healthy, while still being kid-friendly.  We pay attention to whole grains, proteins, and vegetables, while limiting sodium and sugar levels.  â€‹â€‹â€‹
